Retention

After the initial phase of wearing braces is complete, your orthodontic treatment will shift to wearing a retainer. Retention is an integral part of treatment and should be taken seriously in order to ensure a long lasting, satisfactory resulting smile. The length of this phase depends on specific patient requirements. Typically retainers should be worn at all times except for when eating and brushing teeth. Dr. Clark and the staff at Stevens Orthodontics will provide specific instructions for each patient’s individual needs.

Here are a few reminders to ensure an effective and inexpensive retention phase:

  • Wear your retainer as often as recommended
  • Keep your retainer in its case when not in use
  • Bring your retainer to each office visit
  • Keep your retainer out of reach of small children and pets
  • Avoid leaving your retainer in extreme temperatures

Follow these steps to keep your retainer clean:

  • Brush your retainer with your toothbrush daily
  • Remove your retainer when eating
  • Place your retainer in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet
