Early Treatment – Kids Club
Children should receive an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Early evaluations are generally to monitor your child’s development and to assist Dr. Clark in determining the appropriate treatment timeline. By age seven permanent molars and incisors have typically erupted and complications such as crowding and crossbites can be identified.
Depending on the patient and the presentation of their orthodontic needs, jaw development and emerging teeth may be properly directed. The goal of early treatment is to reduce the complexity of treatment when the patient is older.
The benefits of childhood treatment may include:
- Balance the width of dental arches
- Provide adequate room for adult teeth
- Prevent the need for adult tooth extractions
- Reduced risk of impacted teeth
- Correction of harmful habits
- Guidance of tooth placement and jaw growth
While early evaluations are encouraged, they typically do not result in early treatment. Because early treatment may not result in a lasting advantage, the pros and cons will be considered extensively. Using his years of education and experience Dr. Clark approaches early treatment cases conservatively. He does not believe that every child can benefit from early treatment and understands that it can actually be detrimental. After the evaluation, parents will receive an honest recommendation regarding the best course of treatment. With your child’s health in mind, Dr. Clark is proud to only recommend treatment that he would provide for children of his own. Stevens Orthodontics provides a fun and comfortable atmosphere for your child’s visits.
